Kryoneri Observatory

Located just outside Kryoneri, at the highest point of a hill covered with black pines and fir trees, at an altitude of over 900 meters, stands the Kryoneri Observatory, the "eye" of humanity into the Universe.

The Kryoneri Observatory, established in 1972 by the National Observatory of Athens, is one of the largest telescopes in the world and an important Research Infrastructure. It features a 1.2-meter diameter reflecting telescope and is one of the three most important telescopes in Greece, with its primary instrument being a CCD camera. The telescope was installed at the station in 1975.

Since 2015, the Kryoneri Observatory has been conducting a lunar observation program funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). In 2016, the telescope was upgraded as part of the NELIOTA program of the ESA, aimed at recording impacts from near-Earth asteroids on the Moon. Additionally, since November 2021, the Very Wide Field of View (VWFOV) device has been in operation, a specialized array of detectors for observing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

The Kryoneri Observatory has undergone continuous upgrades in recent years, culminating in its inclusion in the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework) and receiving funding to transform it into an interdisciplinary center bridging Earth sciences with space science, providing a holistic view of scientific knowledge. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of various scientific issues related to both the immediate and broader terrestrial environment: soil, subsoil (seismic activity monitoring), flora and fauna, ecology, atmosphere, weather conditions, air pollutants, sky, space, and the universe.

The upgrade of the observatory is expected to lead to the so-called "knowledge return" from scientific institutions to society, contributing significantly to the enhancement of educational and cultural standards while further raising awareness of environmental issues. With this, the Kryoneri Observatory is evolving into a center for cultural, educational, and scientific tourism for the wider region. Visitors can already tour its facilities and engage with science and its achievements. Schools and other educational institutions are regularly hosted at the observatory, where they receive guided tours and demonstrations of the telescope's work.

A major event is the annual "Open Doors" event, held every fall, where Science and Knowledge are combined with Culture and Nature. During "Open Doors," visitors have the opportunity to tour the observatory and observe the night sky through telescopes, while cultural events (such as concerts) take place concurrently.
