At an altitude of over 500 meters, in the central square of the village of Mikros Valtos, stands the impressive Church of Saint Demetrios, renowned for its distinctive craftsmanship and architectural value. According to accounts from older residents, construction of the church began in 1898, led by skilled stone masons from Epirus, with the active support of the local community. The stones used were locally sourced from two areas of the village, Panteleimon and Koukogera.
The building process took seven years, completing the church's frame and roof in 1905. The church is designed in a cruciform basilica style, characterized by a simple stone exterior and a richly decorated interior, featuring an ornate plaster iconostasis and an imposing carved wooden ceiling with a central dome, crafted by the master artisan Antypas.
Inside, visitors can admire the village's treasured icons, some dating back to 1843. Externally, the church's colorful stained glass windows and pointed roof give it the appearance of a Gothic cathedral, while the beautifully carved stone cornice adds a unique touch of ecclesiastical artistry.
This remarkable monument, with its deep Christian heritage, offers visitors in its courtyard an unobstructed view of the Corinthian Gulf and the mountains of Roumeli, making it a truly awe-inspiring place of worship.
