A few hundred meters south and west of the port of Kiato lies the complex of the five ASO warehouses. These imposing stone-built structures are a significant landmark from a time when Kiato was the center for the trade of the "black gold" of Corinthia – the Corinthian currant.
Built during the interwar period by the currant merchant Vasilis Frantzis, the warehouses were later purchased by the Autonomous Currant Organization (ASO). They were strategically constructed next to the city's port to facilitate the export of the product and became a key driver of growth for the city, its port, local trade, and agricultural production.
Visitors can easily appreciate the unique architectural value of these buildings, characterized by simplicity and functional design. The five structures form a unified functional and morphological complex, yet each building has its own steeply pitched roof – a distinctive feature of industrial architecture. On the iron bars of the oversized windows, one can still see the initials of the first owner: "ΒΦ" (Vasilis Frantzis).
Today, the restoration work on the complex is in its final stages. One of the auxiliary buildings has already been fully renovated and now houses the Sikyonians Municipal Library. The other five buildings, expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2023, are being transformed into cultural and arts spaces, including a Municipal Theater, a Municipal Cinema, a Conference Hall, and, of course, the Museum of Lysippos Replicas – the first museum in the world dedicated to the life, work, and artistic influence of the great sculptor from Sicyon.
Overall, the ASO warehouse complex has been officially named after the renowned Greek composer Giannis Spanos, a native of Kiato, by decision of the Sikyonians Municipal Council.
In the courtyard of the warehouses, amidst the ivy and freshly restored stone, one can admire the architectural perfection of these structures, feeling history breathe beside them, with the scents of fresh currants and the salty sea air. It becomes clear to visitors that the present cultural renaissance in these spaces is a direct result of the wealth of the land, which these buildings once served.
The Sikyonians Municipal Library spans two floors and houses over 6,000 book titles, including literature, philosophy, reference materials (encyclopedias, etc.), children's literature, poetry, essays, history, psychology, supplementary textbooks for students, biographies, and works by Greek classical authors. The library primarily operates as a lending library but also offers a reading area for visitors. The first floor, where many events are held, includes a children's section and a section dedicated to Local History.
